Johannes Allart 1754 - 1816
Johannes Allart was born around 31st. of March 1754 in Wendesheim
(near Zwolle in the province of Overijsel - Holland) were his father was a
preacher. He took his oath as a book salesman on February 4th. 1773 and
joined the gilt already on February 8th. 1773. He married in September
1774, all this in Amsterdam, were he was on of the the most important
publishers.
He exercised a big influence on the development of his contemporary
and not in the least on his profession. From 1812 onwards he lived in The
Hague and died there November 8th. 1816.
He wrote: De Vrijheid, Amsterdam 1783, 3 editions the same year; Aan
de Nederlande jeugd, Amsterdam 1784; De Waereld, 1st. part, never
completed, Amsterdam 1786, all published anonymously, but recognised by
him.
Thus Johannes Allart (1754-1816), was portrayed in an anonymous poem:
'A sluggard may dig and hide his talent in the earth
Or at his Presses or Scrap paper sigh
Allart adorns the lot! So pleasing to the eye!'
